SHAH ALAM: Rejimen Sempadan upgraded. Army chief Gen Zamrose Mohd Zain on August 11 announced the battalions of the Rejimen Sempadan (some 12 battalions strong) have been upgraded as standard infantry battalions (BIS). BIS is the standard Tentera Darat nomenclature of its infantry units like the Royal Malay Regiment and the Royal Ranger Regiment.

There were scant details on the upgrading apart that new camps with family quarters will be constructed for RS units, when funds are available, of course. Other benefits of the upgrading to the BIS are new training opportunities and staff positions as well. Once the capabilities are upgraded, the RS units will be multi-role and multi-tasking combat entities, according to the Army

Perhap, the upgraded RS battalions will also receive new weapons like the RPG and the Carl Gustav as well as 4X4s armed with machine guns and grenade launchers. Most of the RS units – one that I had seen anyway – were mostly armed with M4A1 carbines and Heckler and Koch HK11E light machineguns and nothing heavier. Do note that the RS soldiers received the same benefits as other soldiers though as they are stationed near border areas their camps may be more austere than the other units.

At the launch ceremony, a diorama conducted showed an RPG tube among the soldiers involved though no other soldiers carried them on the parade ground nor when performing their duties.

  • Marhalim,

Apart from having 8 men [to fit into a Adnan and MIFV] and a Milkor and RPG; are there any other differences between BIS and non BIS sections? Under the old/non BIS organisation; sections only had a M20A3 and a LMG and comprised 10-12 [?] men.

Also, in that pic is it really a RPG tube [looks too short and too narrow for the warhead] or a 60mm mortar? I've always wondered how we carry RPG reloads. Most users use a sack with a draw string.

  • The 60mm mortar is nearest to the camera, the RPG is in the middle. I believed the RS units will now follow the standard RMR/RRD infantry TOE, not the mechanised unit, with 10/12 men per section.
