• Why do we need a Landie Simulator? Why don't we just put people in a Landie with a roll cage and a 4-point harness with safety clothing? Hell, I've done a roll over in a Nissan Patrol and then had an instructor yelling at me about how to unass and get into a gunfight. Boy that was fun!

  Marhalim: Its probably because simulators are in-thing right now...of course it will probably be cheaper to buy 10 Defenders specifically for training purposes than buying a high fidelity simulator and the building to house...unless you are building a simulator designed for close combat training,...

• I'm just hoping the TDs maintanance habits improve. As mentioned earlier, I was that large number of Pinzgauers are in the scrap yard because personnel were not trained to maintain them. Similiarly, TD in the past has had problems with its BV206 fleet. Who knows? Maybe in the near future, a new, unamoured 4x4 will be selected, to add to the G wagons and Vamtacs.

  Intrestingly, the interior modifications done to the newest Land Rovers in service were done locally and are not approved by Land Rover UK.

  Yes, and when that simulator breaks down? I can at least take a Landie to Ah Chong Workshop and have it fixed. One simualtor.....how many drivers do they intend to train?

• According to the BBC, the TNI-AL has announced that it can only use 5 ships a day to patrol the whole Indonesian coast.

• What's the fascination with landrovers anyways? easy to fix? cheap spare parts? unmatched offroad capability?

  Regarding the pinzgauers.. perhaps the government/jpj/whatever should allow those (retired army trucks etc) to be reregisted as regular road vehicles. I am pretty sure a lot of enthusiasts are waiting eagerly to get their hands on those fellas, especially with the lockable differentials and all that. With usual malaysian ingenuity in engineering, some workshop would be able to fit any turbodiesels into those trucks. Even giving those to perhilitan, forestery etc would serve something better than laying in the scrapyard...

  marhalim: I do not know the reason for the Landie fascination, any one into 4x4 knows Toyota Hilux is a better vehicles, in all respect.
  Technically I believe all government equipment must be disposed/scrap properly. So you could buy several items which had been scrapped and cobbled together to make or modify into another vehicle like those drive trains of the old volvos which were grafted into original Toyota Landcruisers to make them into super 4x4 trucks. Of course, it will be difficult to register them as road worthy vehicles, so just use them as lori hantu!
  There is no surplus market here in Malaysia unlike the ROW. Which is good anyway since there will be a lot of questions for the disposal as was the original purchase!

  i 101% confident most of our workshop can fix the vehicle to be disposal to the new vehicle.
  look how the modify the motor for rempit.anyway we can save budget using that way rather than buying new vehicle at this time.we can save the money.but i don thing the top officer thinking like that.they cannot mark up anything using this way.u know how the cronies our contry.hahahahaha

• According to a very reliable source, the problem with the Pinzgauer is that it has a unique suspension system, a drive train with a tube type chassis. Unless there are trained people who can perform regular preventive maintainance like in the British or Kiwi army, there will be problems. Thats why a number of Pinzgauers have been seen in scrapyards. Lets hope the same thing does not happen to the MAN 8x8s which carry the TRS3D radar and Vickers bridge.

  As for the Hilux, the version used by the Malaysian army for ligt duties, unlike earlier versions, has an inferior off road capability to the Land Rover. I also suspect that the Land Rover will not wear out as fast if properly mantained.

• The big + to a Landie is the AL bodywork. Does not rust.

• URO Vamtacs cost RM660,000 per unit? Isn't that kind of pricey?

  Marhalim: I have not figured out the actual price for the Vamtacs we purchased last year but our military always paid premium prices for its equipment. That is why people are scrambling to get over Mindef pearly gates.........
