Motorola Tactical Radio Sets

SHAH ALAM: Back on October 12 2023, Malaysian Defence wrote about a tender to supply 555 section tactical radio sets for the Army. Checks on the Eperolehan website today did not show whether the LOA for the tender has been issued or not.

From the October 12 post:

Anyhow, the Defence Ministry has published a tender for the supply, deliver, test and commissioned 555 section tactical radio set for the Army. The tender is valid from today โ€“ October 12 to November 2. There are no detailed specifications for the radio sets apart from the numbers being sought.
The Eperolehan website did published the Army estimates for the tender which is RM49.95 million.

I speculated previously that the tender was awarded to local companies either selling Thales or Harris tactical radios. However, I was told recently the contract was awarded to Cendana Auto’s defence communication subsidiary, NusaDefcom. It was through this subsidiary, Cendana Auto, had integrated the radio system in its FFR vehicles.

The contract for the 555 section tactical radios was confirmed today when the Army posted on Facebook on the visit by Army chief TS General Hafizuddeain Jantan to the Motorola facility in Florida in the United States. The post did not name Cendana Auto as the company selected for the contract. But pictures posted with the post clearly showed the company officials with the PTD entourage.

Why Motorola tactical radios then? I was told that this is to ensure compatibility with the police and other government agencies who operate the same radios. An important consideration during border patrols.

  1. In the world of software-defined radios (SDR), the brand of the hardware does not matter much. So that is pretty much a moot excuse.

  2. If these radios are for integration with FFR vehicle its understandable that Cendana won it.

    “Why Motorola tactical radios then?”
I can only believe 50%. Radios are radios tho. Even if their to share data, as long the comm channel is compatible, it shouldnt matter what the brand of radio. Otherwise its a monopoly.

  3. afaik Motorola radio have some manufacturing facilities (or is it their authorised parts suppliers?) in Malaysia.

  4. Yes, they have manufacturing facilities in MY. Whether they also manufacture the tactical radios locally is beyond me. But as usual they cannot enter the tender.

  5. Under the US Foreign Corrupt and Practices Act (FCPA) you are not allowed to do these ‘study’ trips

  6. Since when does US laws applies to us here? Are we now their fiefdom? (joe)
We’re somewhat the US of A’s fiefdom. We have FBI agents at our ports seeing to the exports of Malaysian products especially electronics going to the States.
I don’t know if this is still true now but I still remember our Immigrations and Customs boys not being too happy about it.

  7. “Weโ€™re somewhat the US of Aโ€™s fiefdom”
Well thanks to PH we are now but we cant let people know about it! Let the loonies think we still have independence while they drink brown water. We just need to make sure business as usual.

“Make sure the Israelis didnโ€™t implant things in it yeahโ€ฆ”
You think you can avoid it? The Israelis will have (or ady have) virus hacks to overload the batteries in them and make it go kaboom!

  8. It’s about time PDRM upgrades to the APX6000 or 8000 considering they’ve been using the XTS2500 prob in a long time.
