More Police than the Armed Forces?

KUALA LUMPUR: Based on the story below, within three years, the police will have more personnel than the Armed Forces including the reserves. Though Malaysian Defence feels that the recruitment may well fell below the target, the tough economic times, may well drive people untuk keje gomen.

With such a large police force being planned. how do you think the budget will pan out within the next five years even with the possibility of a new government? Since the opposition has voiced out its support for more internal security, its more likely that PDRM and not ATM will get the big bucks, Malaysian Defence believes.

It is also a clear indication that those in power – in and out of uniform believes that our security challenges in the near future at least, are mostly internal with some territorial disputes of course. Maybe I should register MalaysianPolice.com…

Police Hope To Achieve 150,000 Personnel Target By 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 3 (Bernama) — The police hope to achieve their target of 150,000 personnel, more than four times the present number, by 2011 to reduce the crime rate and maintain order in the country, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said Wednesday.

He said that of the existing 36,235 personnel, 6,901 served at Bukit Aman while the remaining 29,334 were deployed throughout the country, including in Sabah and Sarawak.

“The government is aware of the shortage of police personnel in several areas, including Sabah and Sarawak. As such, the ministry is taking steps to overcome the problem,” he said when replying to Lim Lip Eng (DAP-Segambut) in the Dewan Rakyat.

Chor said only 6.5 per cent of the 6,901 personnel at Bukit Aman handled administrative work, adding that they had to be assisted by civilian staff.

  • The target sounds too ambitious. However, I agree that there should be at least as many policeman as armed forces personnel.
