SHAH ALAM: Like other units based at the Sg Besi (Sempang) airport, the PDRM Air Wing Unit is moving out as the land there had been earmarked for re-development.

The Sg Besi base was the Air Wing’s main operating base in the peninsula apart from the training base in Ipoh. The Air Wing also operates from two other bases namely in Kuching, Sarawak and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Although the facilities at Sg Besi remained operational, the air assets have been dispersed at the other airports pending the completion of a new air base in Subang, slated to be completed in April, next year. The new air base is located in between the Ara Damansara Medical Centre and the Petronas Fuel Depot.

It is expected that the new air base will be operational by late 2016 or early 2017. The new air base is being developed by 1 Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) the developer of the Sg Besi airport land for the Home Ministry and ultimately, the police.

Among others the new air base will have a five storey office cum hangar building, officer’s mess, multi-function hall, an aircraft storm shelter, transport store and others. Unfortunately, there is no spare land for quarters at the location or in nearby areas. Perhaps they will reserved some space for the quarters when the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia land in Sg Buloh is re-developed.

The turnkey contractor is Perbadanan Perwira Harta Malaysia (PPHM), a subsidiary of the Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT), the Armed Forces provident fund. PPHM is also the turnkey contractor for the other units moving out from Sg Besi airport, namely the RMAF – Sendayan , Kuantan and Subang airbases and the 31 Rejimen Artileri Di Raja camp in Kajang.

  1. Why on earth do PDRM need an airbase? Is it worth it for a law enforcement agency from a country with an economy of our size? Can someone please tell me how is that Super King Air 350 being utilized?

of course they need a place to park their planes and helicopters. They cannot just park them as they please first and foremost parking at airports are not free and as government owned machines it is under the regulations for them to have a secure facility for parking and storage. As for what is the role of the King Air shown your guess is as good as mine.

  2. Out of topic. The eurofighter consortium countries have provided a letter of support to provide intellectual property and transfer of technology to indonesia. Looks like indonesia is going to purchase the typhoon
