PETALING JAYA: The picture below are those of KD Kasturi and PLA Navy frigate, Mianyang and Huainan. The Mianyang of course is the frigate that had grounded in a disputed shoal off the western Philippines where it had run aground a few days ago while Huainan is an earlier version of the frigate.
Mianyang, from Wikipedia, is a Type 053H3 (NATO codename Jiangwei II) were Chinese frigates that entered service with the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) in the 1990s and 2000s.
From Wiki, we know the frigates of the class were derived Type 053H2G Jiangwei I class, built between 1988 and 1991. From the pictures all three ships look very similar doesnt it? Yes, the Kasturi which is about 1,500 tonnes is smaller than the Chinese frigates. But the forecastle looks nearly the same as well as the stern. It is interesting to note that the latest PLA Navy destroyers had the looks of the Korean KDXII destroyers. Perhaps we will see more original designs in the future as the PLA Navy matures.
